A New Dolphin Calf Spotted in Kratie Province

Cambodian Tribune –

A newly born dolphin calf was spotted swimming among other four adult dolphins in Kampi deep pool located in Kampi village, Sambok commune, Chetr Borei district, Kratie province, said WWF-Cambodia in a statement released yesterday.

The calf was found three days ago by WWF-Cambodia’s Mekong dolphin research team, it said, stressing that this is the third dolphin calf birth to be recorded in early 2020.

In early February, it pointed out, the research team of the Fisheries Administration, Kratie and Stung Treng Fisheries Administration Cantonments and WWF conducted photo-ID based survey to estimate the population of the Irrawaddy dolphins in Mekong River, spending several days riding on wooden boats and taking thousands of pictures of the dolphins to support identification of individual dolphin living in a 190-kilometre stretch of the Mekong mainstream from Kratie town to Cambodia-Laos border.

During the research, our team was already able to record two new dolphin calves, underlined the statement.
