Bran Sinal is the Manager of the Mekong Turtle Conservation Center
I love taking care of animals and understanding the nature of their lives. When I was young, I always wanted to see what softshell turtles looked like, because our elders kept telling us how gentle these animals are and how slow they walk. They never attack anyone, and they are one of the animals that live even longer than humans. As the number of these animals decreased, one day I heard of an organization working on turtle and softshell turtle conservation (the Mekong Turtle Conservation Center), and they had an open vacancy to work at the conservation center. I was very interested and applied for that job, even though I didn’t have any skills and experience related to turtles at all. Since 2011, I have learned more about the turtles and also received training from my colleagues and reptile experts from both Cambodia and abroad.
Currently I am the manager of this conservation center, where I am in charge of all activities including conservation, taking care of the turtles, center development, and partnerships. My daily role is to guide the local and international tourists who visit the centre, and prepare and disseminate educational programs to students and communities so they can understand and take part in protection of this endangered species. I also take care of all the turtles that are donated by the villagers, especially to release the turtles back to their natural habitats.
My love for these animals grows stronger day by day – they are very gentle and never harm us. I like that I can take care of and raise the animals, and at the same time I can teach the younger generation to understand about conservation and protection of turtles and softshell turtles, and their specific biology. There are not a lot of experts on these species, especially the Mekong softshell turtle, so if I don’t share this information to the younger generation, it would be a waste.
This work is very important to me because it is what I love doing, it’s been my dream job since I was a kid, and it’s a job that contributes to society. I have been motivated by villagers, authorities, local committees, monks, my family, and the conservation team, especially Mr. Yoeung Sun, the founder of this center, who has always shared his experiences from experts abroad, and who has encouraged me from the very beginning of my career. I am also thankful to the Fisheries Administration for collaborating with us on a training and outreach program about turtles and the fisheries law with local communities, and for joining our turtle release programs. I hope to see more support and collaboration from other local and international organizations with the Mekong Turtle Conservation Center, since it is the very first center in Cambodia that works on this species. To me, “conservation” refers to protecting and building what we have so it lasts and develops as a treasure for our younger generation.

ខ្ញុំស្រលាញ់ការថែទាំសត្វនិងស្វែងយល់ពីធម្មជាតិនៃការរស់នៅរបស់ពួកវា។ ពេលដែលខ្ញុំនៅក្មេងតែងតែចង់ឃើញចង់ស្គាល់ថាតើកន្ធាយមានរូបរាងយ៉ាងម៉េចពីព្រោះចាស់ៗតែងតែប្រាប់យើងពីចរឹកស្លូតបូតរបស់សត្វទាំងនេះរួមទាំងការធ្វើដំណើរដ៏យឺតៗរបស់ពួកវា។ ពួកវាមិនដែលវាយប្រហារនរណាទេ ហើយពួកវាជាប្រភេទសត្វដែលមានអាយុវែងជាងមនុស្សទៅទៀត។ នៅពេលចំនួនសត្វនេះថយចុះ ថ្ងៃមួយខ្ញុំបានលឺអង្គការអភិរក្សអន្តរជាតិមួយដែលធ្វើការលើប្រភេទអណ្តើកនិងកន្ធាយ ហើយគេបានត្រូវការជ្រើសរើសបុគ្គលិកដើម្បីធ្វើការក្នុងមជ្ឈមណ្ឌលអភិរក្សនេះ។ ខ្ញុំមានចំណាប់អារម្មណ៍យ៉ាងខ្លាំងនិងបានដាក់ពាក្យស្នើសុំធ្វើការនេះ ទោះបីជាខ្ញុំមិនមានជំនាញនិងបទពិសោធន៍ពាក់ពន្ធ័នឹងអណ្តើក កន្ធាយទាល់តែសោះ។ តាំងពីឆ្នាំ២០១១មក ខ្ញុំបានរៀនយ៉ាងច្រើនពីអណ្តើក កន្ធាយនិងទទួលការបណ្តុះបណ្តាលពីក្រុមការងារ អ្នកជំនាញអណ្តើក កន្ធាយទាំងក្នុងនិងក្រៅស្រុកផងដែរ។
ថ្មីៗនេះខ្ញុំបានក្លាយជាប្រធានមជ្ឈមណ្ឌលអភិរក្សអណ្តើក កន្ធាយមេគង្គ ដែលត្រូវទទួកបន្ទុករាល់សកម្មភាពរួមទាំងការអភិរក្ស ការថែទាំអណ្តើក កន្ធាយ ការអភិវឌ្ឍន៍មជ្ឈមណ្ឌល និងស្វែងរកដៃគួរជាដើម។ តួនាទីប្រចាំថ្ងៃរបស់ខ្ញុំគឺជាមគ្គុទេសក៍សម្រាប់ទាំងភ្ញៀវជាតិនិងអន្តរជាតិដែលមកទស្សនាក្នុងមជ្ឈមណ្ឌលនេះ ព្រមទាំងរៀបចំនិងផ្សព្វផ្សាយកម្មវិធីអប់រំទៅដល់កូនសិស្សនិងសហគមន៍ដើម្បីអោយពួកគេយល់និងចូលរួមការការពារប្រភេទដ៏កម្រនៅលើពិភពលោកនេះ។ ខ្ញុំថែមទាំងថែរក្សាអណ្តើកនិងកន្ធាយទាំងអស់ដែលប្រជាជនបរិច្ចាកដល់មជ្ឈមណ្ឌលនេះ ជាពិសេសការលែងពួកវាទៅក្នុងធម្មជាតិវិញ។
ខ្ញុំចាប់ផ្តើមការស្រលាញ់ចូលចិត្តប្រភេទទាំងនេះខ្លាំងឡើងៗពីមួយថ្ងៃទៅមួយថ្ងៃព្រោះពួកវាជាសត្វស្លូតបូតមិនដែលបង្កគ្រោះថ្នាក់ដល់យើងទេ។ខ្ញុំពេញចិត្តដែលបានថែរក្សានិងចឹញ្ចឹមសត្វទាំងនេះហើយជាមួយគ្នានេះដែរខ្ញុំអាចបង្រៀនក្មេងៗជំនាន់ក្រោយដើម្បីអោយស្គាល់ហើយយល់ដឹងពីការអភិរក្សនិងការការពារប្រភេទអណ្តើកនិងកន្ធាយនឺងលក្ខណៈជីរសាស្រ្តពិសេសរបស់ពួកវាផងដែរ។ ជាការពិតណាស់នៅក្នុងប្រទេសកម្ពុជាមិនសូវមានអ្នកជំនាញដែលសិក្សាលើប្រភេទអណ្តើក កន្ធាយ នោះទេជាពិសេសប្រភេទកន្ធាយក្បាលកង្កែប (រមិច)នេះតែម្តង ដូច្នេះហើយប្រសិនបើខ្ញុំមិនចែករំលែកពត៌មានដ៏មានសារសំខាន់នេះទៅដល់ក្មេងៗទេ វានឹងខាតបង់ទាំងប្រយោជន៍ជាតិនិងសង្គម។
