Selling the Mekong giant catfish, the king of fish, will bring bad luck and disaster

Matt Nei is a 58-year-old Muslim fisherman living in Prek Touch Village, Chi Ro 1 Commune, Tbaung Khmum District, Tbaung Khmum province. He has strong faith in Mekong giant catfish from his ancestors. During the fishing season in December 2017, Matt Nei caught a 130-kilogram Mekong giant catfish.

Matt Nei said, “I caught a Mekong giant catfish at 12 midnight in the Mekong River by seine nets with footrope bags. First of all, when I pulled the nets, there was something completely different about breaking the water. Suddenly, I had a panic, a tremor, because it was not clear exactly what it was. Everyone thought that it was a crocodile. ”

Matt Nei added: “I did not intend to sell it, because it is a king of fish according to the beliefs and traditions since my ancestors. According to the belief, the sale of the king of fish will cause one to fall into disastrous conditions.” He added: “Honestly, the youth of 20 years old did not know it was the Mekong giant catfish. But I’ve seen it caught by the fishermen when I was young, so I knew it was a Mekong giant catfish.”

Shortly after he caught the fish, Matt Nei had a consensus with his wife and children to remove the Mekong giant catfish from the seine net with and release it into the river. “I raised its head on the sand in the river and prayed for peace in the faith and religious traditions. And I never forgot to ask from the King of Fish to send other fishes to catch instead,” Matt Nei said.

Matt Nei’s wife Matt So, 63, saidd: “My daughter called me by cellphone and said, ‘There was a big fish caught! There was a big fish was caught!’ Immediately, I knew exactly that it was a Mekong giant catfish. I also told my husband and my son-in-law on the phone to please let it go. At the same time, other fishermen insisted to keep it for the villagers to see, but I was afraid of it dying and forced them to released it away. ”

Nei Rina, the 24-year-old daughter of Matt Nei and Matt So, said, “I was sleeping in a floating house, and then my father and my husband shouted, ‘A big fish! A big fish!” I woke up, and then I took my cellphone in order to take pictures. But unfortunately, my cellphone was too low capacity to be able to take good pictures at night. We were so happy because we did not see the catfish before,” she said. “After we released it, we were chatting until the morning came, did not go back to sleep, as it was impressive among us. I also prayed for peace by rubbing its head before releasing it. ”

Pa Si, the 25-years-old son-in-law of Matt Nei and Mat So, was among the fishermen who caught the Mekong giant catfish. He said, “I have never seen the Mekong giant catfish before. When it was caught, I was feeling nervous and thought that I would tie it and bring to the shore so that the people in the village could see it. But my father-in-law told me not to do that, just let it go as it could be die.”

The Mekong giant catfish (Pangasianodon gigas) is a species that is considered to be critically endangered. This fish species is protected by the Cambodian Fisheries Law. However, every year, during the end of October and early December, some of these species are were caught by “Dai” stationary bagnets and quickly sold to brokers who will be exporting to Thailand and Vietnam. However, there are also some fishermen who have faith in the Mekong giant catfish, and immediately release them after they are caught, such as Matt Nei’s family.
