Oh human! Why don’t you have mercy? I struggle to live with all my eggs in me, but you don’t have any mercy to set me free.
You even killed me against the law. You fearlessly try to hunt and electrocute me anywhere. You fear nothing, not even the Fisheries Administration. You are so selfish that you can ignore the loss and extinction of my kind by all means only to feed your market.
Sellers at the market keep boasting about how delicious the fish with eggs is, whether big or small size, and that we’re fresh from the Mekong River. You never thought about the extinction of our species. We, small and big fish, beg for your mercy, please spare our lives for more breeding. But you are so inhumane, no mercy, you never thought about keeping us for the future.
Look at the happy buyers who compete to buy small fish, big fish, adult fish or fish full of eggs. They are so happy and boast about how delicious we are. They haven’t thought that it is not beneficial at all. They haven’t thought about how many eggs we have. 1 million or 2 million? Can you count them all? If you spare our lives, they will hatch; if you spare our lives, we will reproduce more in the river and nature. If you stop buying, there will be no selling. Fishermen will not struggle to illegally catch them anymore, because they will only waste time and petrol, there will be only expenses without profit.
Oh my children, you finally hatched and I’m very delighted. I hope you will grow mature faster to fill the market’s need and to feed people, but unfortunately you die because heartless people catch you with mosquito nets before you even reach maturity. People catch us in the river and ponds and process us into marinated fish, fish paste, and trash fish. They never follow the laws that prevent them from using illegal fishing gears and fishing activities from 1st June each year.
All fishermen, buyers and sellers should gather together to release fish with eggs to the rivers in order to protect the endless resource pool.
