$100 million freshwater aquarium planned for Phnom Penh

A $100 million freshwater aquarium, part of which will be a research and breeding center, is being planned for Phnom Penh.  The project, revealed in a meeting between Prime Minister Hun Sen and a visiting Japanese delegation from the Japan-Cambodia Association on Friday, will be funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Takahashi Fumiaki, president of the Japan-Cambodia Association and former Japanese ambassador to Cambodia, said his side would conduct a study on possible locations with cooperation from various Cambodian ministries, Srey Thamrong, a minister attached to the prime minister’s department, told reporters after the meeting.

Mr. Takahashi said his association will work with JICA on the funding for the aquarium project, Mr. Thamrong said, adding that the project is not only important for Cambodia’s more than 600 species of fish but also for tourists who want to learn about them.
