River Camp – A Memorable Experience

by Aing Sereyrath

May 2017 was the first time that I led a group of 35 people to experience the Mekong River landscape through Der Prey. It was such an exciting and memorable moment of the year because the campsite was on an island in the middle of the Mekong River close to the deep pool where dolphins usually live. It was also a chance for me to share and discuss a lot about the Mekong River and its challenges with the group of participants.

Under the beautiful clear sky with fresh air from the river, it was a great time for the participants to reconnect themselves with nature and the Mekong River. Therefore, my team and I started the first activity after dinner, which was a big group discussion about the Mekong River, its challenges and actions that an individual person can take to conserve the river. Next, we played a Mekong mapping game in which each group  represented the important tributary rivers, the Mekong River, Tonle Sap Lake, and some important landscapes like Prey Lang. Participants walked, ran, and found their right place based on the geography of the Mekong River Basin that they learned in school. Some of them were right and some of them were wrong, but they all learned about the connected water flow and geography of the Mekong River. Last but not least, before we closed our evening session, we had another activity called “Speaking to Nature.” For this activity, we gave participants a quiet time to sit in silence with no interaction with each other and say words from their heart to nature, such as wishes for nature and expressions of gratitude. This activity led participants to keep discussing until midnight, which was my wish for that River Camp.

Although there were some challenges such as running late in the schedule, difficulties to find a good camp site, and trying to navigate an unknown forest during the trip, nothing could stop me and my team from following our agenda and plan. In the morning, all participants woke up early and joined in meditation to appreciate nature by closing their eyes and paying attention to their surrounding environment, which we called “Listening to Nature,” before our adventurous day began. The local community also came to share their stories which were so inspiring to everyone during the trip as well.

Besides the experience of learning and discussion, all participants also had a great time in nature through trekking, swimming, and a boat trip. We visited many wonderful places through Preah Romkel Community-Based Ecotourism during this River Camp, such as a Ramsar Site, dolphin pool, Sopheakmit Waterfall, and a community forest, which I had wished to visit since I was in university.

River camp was my most loved experience among the trips that I led in 2017 because it was my goal to create a trip that combined both education and fun. For me, the exhaustion of over-night preparation for these trips and the tiredness from trekking are worth it once I am surrounded by nature, and participants are actively involved to learn about the environment.

Nature makes us feel fresh, and no matter how tired we get, nature heals us.
