Freshwater Biodiversity

The Mekong River basin teems with life. It is home to more than 850 species of fish, including four of the 10 largest freshwater fishes in the world. A rich assemblage of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and insects also depend on the river. Much remains to be discovered about the Mekong’s unique wildlife species, many of which are found nowhere else in the world, and which also face a growing number of challenges and threats.
